Reading List!

December 1, 2019 by Deb Purcell Leave a Comment

It’s been requested that I share a list of books that I read from in class. It has come to pass that I usually read a passage from a book at the beginning of class and weave that theme throughout the class. It started a few years ago when I was reading a book and each chapter was SO good, I just HAD to share everything I was reading in my classes. Now it’s a regular thing. I tried a couple of times to intentionally not read and changeup my class and the way I themed, but every time I did that, my regulars asked: “What’s up? Where are the readings?” Apparently, my readings are an integral part of why students show up for my classes.

Part of my daily (except on weekends) routine, is to read something inspirational. I learned about this in my first training with Kevan Gale and Fluid Yoga; daily inspirational reading, along with journaling, meditation and a few other practices, support us to create contentment and intentionality in our lives. I have been practicing this ever since. If this sounds overwhelming- reading something Monday to Friday- if it helps, many of these books have short chapters. I don’t create significant amounts of time in my life to read. I prefer short and sweet, except during vacation periods. In cases where the chapters are long, I read half a chapter per day, or 10-pages per day (whichever is less ;-)). The daily inspirational reading really does help. Like meditation, it’s a little bit of soul connection and reminder, in the middle of my busy life.

Without further ado, here’s a list of what I’ve read to my classes! I’ll update the list when I’ve got new books to add:

Carry On, Warrior by Glennon Doyle

Love, Warrior by Glennon Doyle

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck by Mark Manson

The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer

Hardwiring Happiness by Rick Hanson

The Buddha Walks into a Bar

Broken Open by Elizabeth Lesser

I’m currently reading: Taking the Leap by Pema Chodron

A few other books I completed before I started reading in my classes and recommend are:

Happiness by Mathieu Ricard

Fierce Medicine by Ana Forest

Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain by Sharon Begley

The Place That Scare You by Pema Chodron

Anatomy of the Spirit by Caroline Myss

The Joy of Living by Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche (actually, this book was so transformative for me that the beginning of my practice, I think I’ll re-read it and bring it to class, so if you come to my classes, you can hold off on this one for now if you’d like!)
